Tire management is the act of managing your tire to maximize the length of travel and minimize the downtown of the vehicle. With managing the vehicle’s tires, companies can apply IoT applications to improve transportation and minimize potential damages towards vehicles and drivers. This is done by maintaining the quality of the tires to be best suited towards its future environments.
According to the U.S department of energy, for every 1psi missing from your car’s set of 4 tires, your tire wears 10 percent faster. Using worn down tires on the road, would result in a poorer fuel economy, and generates more pollution into the air. So, by managing your tires, it helps extend the lifespan of the tire by reducing wear and tears and improves the overall fuel efficiency. IoT applications in the tire, solves both of those issues without human error in monitoring, and ensures the tire is ready to be on the road.
An IoT Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is one way you can manage your tire. One approach to control your tire is using an IoT Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Direct TPMS and Indirect TPMS are the two different types of systems now in use. To gauge the amount of air in each tire, a sensor called the Direct TPMS is installed within the wheel. A signal indicating that the tire needs to be checked out is delivered to the driver by the car’s computer system when the air pressure falls below 25%. The second way, Indirect TPMS works with your cars Antilock Braking System (ABS) wheel speed sensor. By having different tire pressures, the wheels will rotate at different speeds, which potentially can be extremely hazardous as the driver is more prone to losing control of the vehicle. So, by having TPMS in your vehicle, it will help reduce the risk of crashing, improve on fuel economy, and reduce the greenhouse gases being produced from the vehicle.
Larger tire manufactures such as Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Continental are all investigating the possibility of IoT- connected sensors and developing software to measure and monitor tire performances. ContiConnect, a Continental software, digitalizes the tires status and monitors commercial fleets for travel. It consists of sensors, yard reader stations, and online services to notice the drivers of potential issues in their vehicle’s tires. As the tire reaches its destination, a yard reader station picks up data from the sensors and transits it to the ContiConnect application. The fleet manager then can access the tire quality over time and view reports and analytics for all vehicles equipped with a sensor. This improves the efficiency of pre or post inspections as the issue is identified before an inspection is done.
